What Is A Simplicity Study Group?

Study Groups (aka Study Circles) take many different forms. They can be conducted in person, via teleconference or on-line. They are usually intimate and small (6-12 participants). And, they can cover a wide variety of topics -- time, money, sustainability, food, spirituality, heritage, community, consumerism, etc. The most important thing is that Study Groups help create a sense of community and a support network for those traveling the path to simplicity.

Click here to search our Simplicity Study Group Database to find a group near you. If you can't find one, feel free to add yourself to the database as interested in forming or joining a group. (Experience has shown us that many Study Groups get started this way.)

Simplicity Study Group Format Overview
Many of the resources you find on our web site can be used for individual study. However, while still quite appropriate for individual study, the resources below are also specifically tailored for use in group study situations.

+ Simplicity Study Circles Using The Circle Of Simplicity

The Circle Of Simplicity: Return To The Good Life, by Cecile Andrews, describes a concrete format for starting a Simplicity Study Circle. The format gives people the tools to change and also fills unmet needs for community and intimacy and the desire to search for truth in the company of kindred spirits.

+ Simplicity Study Groups Using Simplicity Lessons

A 12-Step Guide To Living Simply

Simplicity Lessons is a practical guide for those who long for a slower pace of life with more time for relationships, fulfilling work, and living one's dreams. Working on your own or as part of a simplicity study group, you will explore the major areas of your life: material possessions, money, time, work, housing, transportation, relationships, inner simplicity, health, community, and environmental sustainability. You will consider not only what simplicity looks like for you as an individual, but also what we can do to create a more simplicity-friendly society.

Simplicity Lessons is an ideal resource for college students and young adults, for people who are contemplating major changes in life, or for anyone who yearns to live more consciously and deliberately.

+ Simpler Living, Compassionate Life

A Christian Perspective

Not enough time? Money? Peace? Can less really be more? What really matters to you? This powerful resource can help you find the questions that challenge you, and the answers that help.

In a rare collection of voices, the authors of Simpler Living, Compassionate Life explore voluntary simplicity as a path to wholeness and abundance. Henri Nouwen, Richard Foster, Cecile Andrews and nineteen other writers encourage you to listen to your own story, and to respond in a dialogue about the fundamental issues of life: time, money , food, spirituality, heritage and community. A diversity of voices and a helpful study guide make this an effective tool for individuals and groups really to consider alternatives to the high-price, high-stress "Good Life:" the riches of simplicity and compassion.

Includes a study gouide for groups and individuals.

+ Food & Faith

Justice, Joy & Daily Bread

Food -- it's enough to drive you bananas: you are what you eat... food pyramids... organics... mad cow disease... animal rights... Genetically Modified Organism (GMO).

Finally, a resource that examines food choices through the lens of faith. In bite-sized pieces, you'll learn to recognize and celebrate food as sacramental, consider the implications of food choices and find help to embody love and compassion in the wider world.

In a rare collection of voices, the authors of Food & Faith prompt us to explore the meaning of our meals. Here Vandana Shiva, Eric Schlosser, M.F.K. Fisher, Wendell Berry and many other authors explore basic issues related to food: its sacramental character, its connections to health, the demise of the family farm, the human and ecological impacts of industrial agribusiness, questions of genetically modified organisms and world hunger. A diversity of voices and a helpful study guide point to promising directions both individuals and communities can take to bring about a healthier and more equitable world through the food we eat.

Includes a study guide for groups and individuals.
