Haven't been able to get hold of my sister yet, but I'm hoping she'll be around this weekend. Sorry for the delay,

| I've loved Dr. Bronners peppermint or almond liquid soap for years. We used to buy it in gallons, and used it for showering, cleaning the bathroom, hand washing lingerie, etc. A gallon lasted a year, and I loved it for scrubbing the tub with a green scrubby. It quit being sold at our co-op... sad. I now use bar soap in the shower & at sinks, but put out liquid soap for guests. |

| I am wondering why bar soap would leave more soap buildup than liquid I am guessing because it is mostly water? |

| A bottle of body wash (or in our case, really cheap shampoo) is what we use in the shower, and the bottles get recycled, of course. Simple, and it doesn't leave the tub a mess or dry my skin. I try bar soap from time to time and always go back to the cheap "body wash". I think a lot of it depends on what sort of water you have, as far as soap buildup, suds, and so forth. I prefer the IDEA of bar soap, but the reality of body wash, lol. |

I think bar soap contains tallow whereas liquid soap does not. The tallow may be the reason for the 'scum' as it is what keeps the bar held together...this is a total guess...
I wish I could find that Dr. Bronners peppermint and almond liquid soap-sounds divine!!! |

| Body wash isn't soap, it's usually sodium lauryl sulfate. That's why I don't use it. That stuff really bothers my skin. I don't really worry that much about soap scum in the shower. If you have to chisel it off, it won't come off on your feet either. |

| Has anyone attempted going totally soap free? If so, how has that worked for you? |

Not totally, but really much less than before. I usually don't handle the soap when the water is on, and then just use it "here" and "there". |

I've noticed that soap actually deodorizes BO better. The washes do a lot of smelling pretty, but don't seem to do this as well.
BTW, I noticed Kirks Cocoa Castile with no lauryl sulftate in a liquid form. A large bottle and it smelled devine....I didn't need it, so I didn't get it, but it smelled really nice, not perfumy. |

Got back from visiting my sister and we didn't get to that store near Route 7 (not enough time). She says the big seller in CT for goat's milk soap is Goatboy (locally made from local goats), but I couldn't find the scent I remember. She says the Goatboy soap is very good soap.
Now I'm on a mission to get back to that store, find its name, and get that soap! |

That was news to me, too, as the local source for the peppermint liquid soap has never stocked it. So - Google to the rescue! www.drbronner.com
The bar soap can be ordered! And you can still get the 1-gallon size liquid! The local store quit carrying it years ago; I thought it had been discontinued. Oh, joy!
(Reality check - it's still about as pricey direct from the source, and you probably have a shipping charge, too. Still gonna try the bar soap, though.) |

I believe that one is soap and one is actually detergent. Detergent reacts less with the minerals in water which is why people often like it for laundry. Also soap has tallow (fat) in it which can leave a residue. I would imagine the degree of hardness in the water makes a difference in how much you notice the buildup. The water is *very* hard where I live. (And I know this because the water company sends us reports of such things). |

Soap is a salt of a fatty acid, and many types of fats will do. It doesn't have to be tallow. Most hard soaps are made with fats containing stearic acid and sodium, but the true liquid soaps are usually made with potassium. When water contains other minerals like calcium, magnesium, etc. there is a reaction with the fatty acid part and the result is scum. If you let the scum dry out and get thick (happens all the time in my shower ) you can chisel it off. It is sort of like a waxy crystal. If you think it is so horrible, check your vitamin label for magnesium stearate. Then again, you might want to change your vitamin brand. |
