I have a question regarding something that was brought up as relevant during this debate. How is the fact that my grandmothers had my parents, my mother had me and I had my daughter relevant to whether or not abortion should be allowable? Maybe the problem is how I'm looking at it and someone can show me the error. My first problem is, if abortion broke the chain of events and I was never born, how could I care? My second problem is I have no way of knowing if the opportunity was even available. My mom's mom was born in 1892. She had her first child in 1912 and her last live birth in 1933. My dad's mom was born in 1913. She eloped so her mother never got to give her "the talk". She thought she had some disease and cried to a neighbour. Her neighbour pointed out that vomiting in the morning and at the smell of chicken and stomach pains are signs of pregnancy. Maybe this is unanswerable. Thanks. |

I don't get the relevance either of that particular debate tactic, though I have seen it used many times.
I'm tired of the whole debate really - I wish both sides could just focus on what they DO agree on - that we should reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies, and provide better options for people who do end up with a pregnancy they weren't expecting. |

I guess the argument being you were not denied the miracle of existence, so how could you in good faith deny it to anyone else.
Which comes back to a whole lot of unstated assumptions, including the idea that souls are somehow floating around out there in search of bodies and that a fertilized egg is the end to that search, that once an egg is fertilized, we are cutting off life promised to that soul by not allowing it to be born.
I agree with BunnyFan, it's time to stop theorizing about stuff we can't possibly know and will probably never agree on, and get down to the practical matters we have a hope of improving. |
Our capacity to do less harm is limited, but our capacity to do good is not. |

i'd like to see Adoption to be an option. Many health plans will spend thousands on fertility treatments, but not adoption. Giving that option to couples would prob. cause a decrease in abortions from preg. women unsure of what choice to make |

| Thank you for the responses. I didn't want to start any arguments so this seemed the best place to ask. |
