I was dying a wig the other day with real hair dye. Oh don't ask it's halloween, ok? And my mom comes in and says maybe she should use some of it to dye her hair. Completely and utterly ridiculous. I talked her out of it.

Now my mom is 70 years old. Who doesn't have a few grays then? It's completely absurd to pretend you don't have any grays at an age anyone would. Futhermore, my moms hair was looking absolutely stunning, shiny healthy manageable, salt and pepper, at least 60% pepper, and without any hints of yellow in the salt :). I mean just beautiful hair. When I go gray (and I'm in no hurry for my hair to lose it's natural pigment but when it does ...) I want to go gray that way so badly. But even she considers dying it. Heh, absurd.

Got community?

I think it looks ridiculous to have dyed brown hair, when with 1/4" roots showing, it is perfectly obvious that your hair is not brown. Actually, it is sad that so much time, effect, money, and pollution go into making someone look fake. JMHO

If I really grasped the reality of how brief life is what would I do differently?

Florence~ I agree with you 100% I used to be into the fake nails and obviously the fake hair and I now I see the beauty in our natural state. I remember after I got my hair highlighted for the umpteenth time I took a look around at all the girls I saw one day and every where I turned our hair looked the same. It was a light bulb moment for me...do I honestly want to look like everyone else? This is crazy!

I loved it when I did dye my hair and I love it now that I don't! Other people's comments never bothered me - and still don't. I wear my hair the way *I* want to and I have always enjoyed both the good and bad choices - LOL!

I saw a woman today that was completely gray and had not a stitch of make-up on her face. She was absolutely beautiful! She was fit and healthy looking, wearing flattering clothes, she had a great figure for her age, a flattering hairstyle, but most important was the smile on her face and the confidence she displayed. I wanna be like her!

Sarahrose~ seeing women like that makes me want to just stop and talk with them and take notes on how they've gotten to that point. Did they once struggle with the thoughts that I am dealing with? I want to ask them so very badly...I want those types of women to shout from the roof tops that there is nothing wrong with being real and being satisfied with who we've become. I read this thread almost everyday because at times I am overwhelmed with feeling like what am I thinking going against the grain. But this thread always reassures me. Thank you all for your comments..I want to start a thread just for us gray haired women:)

If I were in my 40s or 50s & just starting to show gray or white - I'd likely just keep my hair natural.

It's much different when you're younger, have very dark hair, or have a strangely patterned gray/white. All of that has been my experience.

I've been coloring my hair since I was in my 20s - and professionally for almost 15 years. It's a pain and an expense I'd like to avoid. But my hair looks much better & actually more natural than if I'd left it in its natural state. I know other people in similar situations.

For some people, gray or white hair could look appropriate or even flattering. All white or all gray hair can be beautiful and some streaks of non-color can be attractive. For others, it's simply an unfortunate genetic fluke.
