Today I had one of the worst experiences ever with a mail order company. I was already disgusted with the poor quality of an expensive pair of slacks, but in looking over the receipt I noticed they offered a rebate on the shipping cost, so I went to the website. It turned out that I had to enter at least one credit card number and ex-date because I would be automatically enrolled in a credit card protection plan as part of the "rebate" deal. In looking at the user agreement, it stated that the credit card plan would be at "the going rate" but nowhere did I see an actual dollar figure.

The slacks were advertised as part acrylic and part wool, but were mostly polyester and acrylic with 1% wool content. They shrank about two inches in length when they were washed and they bagged at the knees. They are going back along with a note that I want to be removed from their mailing list.

So it's back to L.L. Bean, Goodwill, and Macy's. I find it nearly unbelievable that some mail order houses are trying to stay afloat with this kind of deceit.

I love shopping at Goodwill, but I really wanted black and white tweed pants and as you all know, you can't go into Goodwill with a list of what you want and expect to find it. This pair of slacks looked really good - part wool, washable, easy care - apparently perfect for business travel.

I've run into problems with mail order before, but I've never had a company try to put one over in such a sleazy way as they did with their shipping "rebate". Anyone who wasn't careful to read all the fine print would have unintentionally signed up for credit card insurance. The whole maneuver was deceptive and greedy.

The mail order house was Appleseed's, an L.L. Bean wannabe, just so you know to stay away.

At the risk of bragging slightly OT,I just grabbed a beautiful Eddie baur flannel shirt at Goodwill, very lightly worn,$5. I say stick with quality mailorder companies and Thrifts, both at the same time if you can.

Here, here Margerymermaid! And you have the added advantage of knowing what they look like after being washed. They probably have done all the shrinking and fading they're going to do. Also they have stood the test of time if they're used and still sale-able.

Hey Fluffy,
That sounds awful. I have found so many wonderful brand name slacks at the Goodwill. Maybe give that a try, and then if you spend three bucks and they're not so good it won't be such a debacle. Also, you get to try them on in the store!
